Family Of Disabled’s (FOD) Gurgaon Chapter organised a programme for the distribution of Assistive Aids to the Physically Challenged people living in the villages of Sohna & Badshahpur of Gurgaon. FOD is a Delhi-based NGO founded by Dr. Rajinder Johar in 1992; he himself is bedridden since 1986, due to spinal injury. Highly impressed with the work of Dr. Johar, GR Malhotra, resident of Sushant Lok, decided to take forward the work of FOD in Gurgaon in the form of a mission, named ‘Bringing Smiles’ - for the benefit of physically challenged people. Malhotra partnered with Vishwas School, Sector 46, which is doing a Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) project. Vishwas has created a database of disabled people of the nearby villages of Sohna & Badshahpur. Vice Admiral Raman Puri (Retd) was the Chief Guest of the Function. He distributed Assistive Gadgets - Tricycles, Wheelchairs, Walkers, Walking Sticks, Rollators, Hearing Aids and Tongue Depressors - to 71 persons (including 9 small children belonging to Vishwas School). 10 beneficiaries received tricycles, which were donated by Rotary Club. The cost of all the other Assistive Aids was funded and arranged by the Gurgaon Chapter of FOD. FOD raises funds through collection of all types of waste material, like newspapers, household goods, clothes, electronic & electrical gadgets on a monthly basis. While going through the process of arranging/organising this event, two major observations were made by the volunteers. First, the hearing impaired were not being provided disability certificate because of a lack of an Audiometry Laboratory in the General Civil Hospital; second, there is an urgent need for providing medical help and rehabilitation to the physically challenged people. The Gurgaon Chapter of FOD has solicited doctors, hospitals, physiotherapy centres and charity organisations to come forward and contact them, so that necessary help can be rendered to the needy.
