Gurgaon MP and Union Minister of State for Defence, Rao Inderjit Singh expressed serious concern over the blockage of natural drains and channels in the City and the entire district, which has led to the poor (natural) harvesting of rainwater. The Gurgaon MP, while chairing a review meeting of the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, asked the District Administration to map the natural water channels using the latest technology, so that these can be revived. Many of these have been encroached by builders, and there is need to get these traditional drains, at Nathupur, Ghata and Sohna, freed. He said that there is need to recharge the ground water, since the water table has gone dangerously low, and also prevent the loss of rainwater. "The rain water first floods Gurgaon and thereafter leads to waterlogging in and around Manesar. It is then wasted in the Najafgarh Drain. This is a major loss, especially for a water scarce city like Gurgaon," he said. Singh proposed the restoration of the centuries old natural channels. He alleged that poor or non-existent urban planning and indiscriminate construction during the erstwhile Congress rule has destroyed the ecology of the area. The Minister also asked pointed questions on the performance of various government schemes, and was particularly concerned about the projects executed under the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme. He asked the government officials to work hard and with utmost honesty, to ensure that development projects deliver as per their goals and uplift the common man in the State. GL Sharma, State executive member of BJP in Haryana, and who is also a member of the monitoring committee, welcomed the move to revive the natural channels, as it would definitely boost the harvesting of rainwater and help improve the ground water level. He also opined that there is need for balanced development in various parts of Haryana; he alleged that the erstwhile Congress government in the State had discriminated against South Haryana in particular.
